Inclusion

Inclusion is a great experience of getting close with concepts of equity, equality, diversity, inclusion and bias. I learned that an outstanding leader ought to show respect to teammates with various values and personal features. I am planning to experience and understand people with different backgrounds as possible as I can this semester by trying to learn and understand different values or identities. To sum up, Inclusion is a great lesson on my way to be a successful leader in the future, which made me understand the importance of recognizing the values of others in building personal relationships. These concepts are really helpful in helping us be well-prepared in the future working position. All values should be equally recognized.

Imprint

The Imprint leadership program should be the largest I-program which I’ve experienced. It focuses on teaching skills related to transitional development, how to build a personal network, and building a great person brand. I really like my Illinois alumni coach, Katie Hayes, who is the chief operating officer in Inspera Health. She shared lots of experienced skills in how to make important decisions during different transitions by using related leadership skills. I learned a new way to define a leader which should be individuals who work with others to create positive change, and leadership can be practiced by anyone interested in contributing without considering any authority or position. During the first phase of the program, I learned people need to attend to two independent systems: emotional brain and rational brain. If you want to make changes, you must break the emotional way of thinking first, which means getting rid of your instinctive reactions. Also, there are three steps you need for transition. First of all, we need to direct the rider, which means you have to be specific on what you want to focus on. Second, we need to find ways to feel the change through appeals to the emotions and senses. Last but not the least, we must create an environment that supports the transition. In this semester, I decided to try to change my way of emotional thinking into a more rational one. Besides, I need to finish my own personal branding, which could be greatly useful in establishing personal networks and future working positions. To wrap up, Imprint is a great leadership program in helping students establish their networks and find easy ways for different transitions.

Intersect

This is a great experience about team constructing and how you can perform better within a team environment. I learned how to find similarities and differences between me and other team member as well as establish team rules or contract. I get to know some featured resistance to a team throughout the discussion, such as personal discomfort, lack of conviction and weak organization performance ethics. By constructing a team environment, I learned that there are dimensions of effective teams: setting up clear group goals, effective two-way communication among member, distributed participation, equal power and high group cohesion. These are all crucial points that an efficient team needs to pay attention. We did put these things into practice by participating the team challenge part of constructing a mini catapult. My group had a great brainstorm during the discussion part of coming up with a free-standing design for shooting. We strongly encourage different ideas or conflicts to make our final catapult better. All in all, the Intersect is a great I-program for participates to learn how to manage groups or perform in groups by using ideal leadership skills. These could be super useful in our working position in the near future.

Insight

This is a great experiences of learning my personal strengths and values. Not only finding those values for my public self but my hidden self as well. I learned lots of useful skills in self-awareness and self-management. I will also try to get through the conscious competence learning model in the near future. Now I am strongly convinced that an outstanding leader should put his own strengths into real teamwork practice. I ought to master the best way to combine my strengths and values together in order to achieve the common goal within different groups. I believe I can maximize my personal strengths in my future working positions, and get over with those weaknesses by learning from others. To wrap up, Petullo Insight Leadership program is a great experience in helping people find their personal values, leadership position as well as social identities.
